Ski Butternut Photography / Design
Infusing energy and consistency through photography, design and voice across print, digital and out of home
Challenge
Creating consistency in branding through photography, design and copywriting into a cohesive voice.
Corralling the client into shooting during a cold season was the second; to save not only retouching, but the appearance of the environment (flush trees in growth), and the comfort of our models. Ultimately the shoot was pushed to a very hot day in June. Looking at the models you’d never know. They all brought such great energy from the two children to our professional models. The high school group were all fairly tight, or became closer on the shoot.
Lowering the temperature of the photos, strategically shooting into controlled settings and some deft retouching sells a cold, aprés lifestyle shoot.

Illustration and Design
The main trail map was painted by artist James Niehues and likely existed for all of Ski Butternut’s history. When Ski Butternut was unable to get a base area map painted at a magnified scale we were tasked to create a birds eye view and stylized to match. Relying on satellite images, this initial perspective was drawn by illustrator Vinicio Vela. When he became unavailable and the skeleton was created, that baton was passed and digital watercolor paintings were created.
